Question

Can I file a superseded Turbotax 2022 1040-SR return before the filing deadline per the IRS news release IR-2022-130, June 23, 2022?

IRS June 2022 says "Additionally, a new, electronic checkbox has been added for Forms 1040/1040-SR, 1040-NR and 1040-SS/1040-PR to indicate that a superseding return is being filed electronically. A superseded return is one that is filed after the originally filed return but submitted before the due date, including extensions."

Yes, you can prepare a superseded return in TurboTax. However, the return will need to be printed and filed by mail. At this time, TurboTax does not support e-filing more than one return.

We recommend that you download your original return to your computer before you make any changes. If you're using TurboTax for Desktop, save your original .tax20XX return with a new name.

If you want to supersede your 2022 1040 and you e-Filed and got ACCEPTED

submit Form 1040-X electronically.

The tax software will send your entire tax return again.

There's no reason to submit if no dollar amounts are changing, UNLESS you are attaching a missing Form or Schedule. in that case you would mail in Form 1040-X with the missing form.
