You can't claim "exempt" on your W-4 if you do not meet the requirements for exemption from withholding. Use the Tax Withholding Estimator on the IRS web site to figure out what to put on your W-4 form. It will let you adjust your withholding to get the approximate refund amount that you want.

Tax Withholding Estimator

The new W-4 form for 2020 and later no longer uses allowances, so you don't claim zero or any other number of allowances. The Tax Withholding Estimator will tell you what to put on your W-4.

If you change your withholding this late in the year, be sure to use the Tax Withholding Estimator again after you get your first paycheck in 2021. What you do to reduce your withholding for the rest of this year will probably not be appropriate for a full year.
