Both of my sons were gifted money when my grandmother died in 2016 that went over the $1050 minimum for filing.  I claim one as a dependent.  My ex husband claims my other son.  Can I file a 1040 on behalf on my dependent son using turbo tax?  and whom should file for my other son (who is his father's dependent)?

Please explain "gifted."  You do not have to file a tax return and claim a gift.  Gifts are not taxable.  Was the "gift" in the form of some sort of retirement account, etc.?

it was a 1099-R monetary gift.

You cannot use your online account to file for your child.  Each return you file using online TT requires its own account and user ID.  With online TurboTax you get one return per fee.  How old is your child?  Did your child have any other income for 2016?  I have asked another SuperUser to give some input on how you should handle reporting an inherited 1099R for a dependent.

Did each of your sons receive a Form 1099-R in their name and Social Security Number?  If not, who received the From 1099-R?
From what kind of retirement account was this distribution made?
What is the code in box 7 of the Forms 1099-R?
Is the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box marked?

my children are 11 and 13 yrs old and they did not earn any other income but the 1099-R amount was more than the minimum to file for each child.  They each received a 1099-R in their names and SS#...I believe the code in box 7 is 4D (i don't have them in front of me at the moment).  I don't recall seeing a box labeled IRA/SEP/SIMPLE checked.  One of my children is my dependent and the other is claimed under their father.  Should I fill out the forms for them or does it not matter who fills out the paperwork?

See Responsibility for Child's Return in IRS Pub 929:

Either parent can prepare a child's tax return.  As other's have said, if online TurboTax is used, a separate TurboTax account will need to be created for each child.  If you are preparing three tax returns, it might be better to use the CD/download version of TurboTax.
