Can i file single even if the years before i filed married, when i was not actually married?

I used to go to a person to do my taxes.He will put my status married but i wasn't married just lived with my partner.This year i want to file single but would i have problems with the IRS because of this?

If you filed incorrect tax returns in previous years, you can file amended returns to correct the error(s).

No one can tell you whether or not filing with the correct status this year would cause the IRS to examine your previous years' returns, but why would you want to file another incorrect return?
