Can I file this tax return next year instead of this year?

Why would you not file your tax return. You are suppose to file your tax return in the year it is due.  2017 tax returns are due by April 17, 2018 unless you file for an extension.  An extension only extends the time you have to file your return, any tax due needs to be paid by April 17, 2018.

If you wait until next year, to file prior year returns you cannot use the Online, you would have to purchase the 2017 Desktop software.  If taxes are owed, than you would owe interest and a penalty until the tax is paid in full.
