Yes, you can request an extension for filing your New York State Taxes, but that doesn't give you extra time to pay the taxes. You are still supposed to pay what you owe by April 15, 2024.

If your New York state return is ready to file, you may want to go ahead and file it and then request an installment agreement to pay your balance due. You can't request an installment agreement for the state through TurboTax.

Instead, select "Pay by check" as your state payment method, then go this link to apply for a state installment agreement.

If you still want to file a state extension, here's how to do that:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account.
  2. Select  State Taxes.
  3. Select Edit to the right of New York.
  4. Continue until your get to You Just Finished Your New York Return.
  5. Select Update to the right of Other forms, which is under Other Forms and Voluntary Contributions.
  6. Select Start to the right of Request Extension of Time to File (Form IT-370).
  7. Select E-file Extension, or Mail Extension.
  8. On the next screen select No, I want to e-file a NY extension at this time.
  9. Follow the on-sreen directions to complete your NY extension.
