If you do not meet the requirements in 2020 to be a dependent and filed your 2020 tax return selecting that you cannot be claimed as a dependent then the IRS will send you the third stimulus check.

The third round of Economic Impact Payments will be based on the taxpayer's latest processed tax return from either 2020 or 2019. If the IRS has received and processed a taxpayer's 2020 return, the agency will instead make the calculation based on that return.

If you are still a dependent in 2020 but not in 2021 then you might be able to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 tax return if you do not receive the third stimulus check.

once you file your 2020 tax return and indicate you are not a dependent, one of two things are going to occur

1) the IRS will see that and send you the 3rd stimulus payment

2) the IRS doesn't send you a stimulus payment and it will become a credit on  your 2021 tax return (assuming you are a NOT a dependent in 2021).
