You may be able to claim your parents as a Qualifying Relative dependent if:

  • You provided more than half of their support in 2016
  • They earned less than $4,050 in gross taxable income (apiece). (Social Security income generally doesn’t count here.)
  •  They live with you 365 days in the year or are related to you.
  •  They aren't  a dependent on someone else’s tax return.
  • Neither is  filing a tax return with a spouse (married filing jointly).
  • Both are U.S. citizens, resident aliens, nationals, or  Canadian or Mexican residents

You can’t claim a dependent if you are a dependent on someone else’s taxes
