If you are using the Desktop software (CD/Download), you can re-name your file by clicking on the File menu, choose Save As.  If you want to pull it up in the software, you would have to choose Find a .tax file and then click on it to open (or choose File, Open tax return). You will not lose your free state.

You can also just choose to start a new return to start over, you would still have the free state program.  Choose File menu, choose New Return.

Once you have done a Save As can you use the File/Remove State Return to remove the current free state and replace it with another free state for that file. Is there a charge for the replacement? Does Removing the free state return remove it from other files or just the Save As file?
