Yes, you can still file taxes without a W-2 or 1099. Usually, if you work and want to file a tax return, you need Form W-2 or Form 1099, provided by your employer. If you did not receive these forms or misplaced them, you can ask your employer for a copy of these documents.  If you file without all of your W-2s, it could delay the processing of your return — and the arrival of any refund.

 

You should contact the employer for the missing W-2 and then amend the return once you have the missing W-2.   NOTE:   Do not amend the return until you know that the original return has been processed.   You will know this when either you receive the refund or you get a letter from the IRS about the missing W-2.
