Can I switch to TurboTax online if I've already purchased the desktop version, or do I have to return the desktop version first?

For the same tax year? 2024? You cannot switch from desktop download and move the 2024 data from desktop software into 2024 online TT software if that is what you are asking. You can seek a refund for the desktop software and then start over in online. You cannot pay for online TT with the license key.
