New form 1040-SR:  introduced during 2019 tax year.  Can use if born before January 2, 1955.

@RitakMyers     Turbo Tax will automatically give you the 1040SR if you or your spouse is 65 or older. It is exactly the same as the regular 1040, just bigger type so it goes on 4 pages instead of 2. You can compare them here
1040 https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040.pdf
1040SR https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040s.pdf
They both use the same instructions, https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040gi.pdf

In the Online version you don't get a choice which one to use. If you are using the Desktop program and look at it in Forms Mode it shows the 1040 but if you print it out it will be the 1040SR. There is a way to force the one you want.

@ptoneo999

It makes absolutely no difference which of those forms you use to file your taxes.

Trying to use 1040-X would be meaningless.

No you cannot use the 1040X to switch the forms and you don't need to ... the ONLY difference between the 1040 & the 1040-SR is the size of the FONT and nothing else.  They are interchangeable.  And the program uses the birthday you entered in the MY INFO section to determine which form to use ... if you (or your spouse) is 65 or older as of 1/1/2020 the 1040-SR is populated automatically.

Only the data gets efiled to the IRS not the form you used

The 1040SR started in 2019.  It is the same as the regular 1040 just larger type and the Standard Deduction chart is added to page 1.  But has the same line numbers.    You automatically get the SR if you or your spouse are 65.  If you are using the Desktop program there is a way to force the one you want.

If you use the Desktop program you can switch to forms and the Info Wks part II has a selection to select 1040SR or not.  You can not change it in the Online versions.   In the Online version if you want to use the regular 1040 form, you can print out the 1040SR and copy the amounts onto the 1040 and then mail your return.

The Form 1040SR would have been used if you were age 65 on 01/01/2023.  There is absolutely no difference between Form 1040 and Form 1040SR other then the size of the print font.  Every Line number and every calculation is exactly the same.
