No, EIN numbers are assigned by the IRS. Each campus has certain prefixes available for use, as well as prefixes that are solely for use by the online application and the Small Business Administration. The Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a nine-digit number that IRS assigns in the following format: XX-XXXXXXX.

You'd only need an EIN if you have employees that you pay.  If you are self-employed and have no employees, you can use your SSN as your tax identification number.

another reason to get an EIN is if you issue 1099's.  you really don't want them to have your SSN. you can apply online at the IRS website.https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/employer-id-numbers

Good point, @Mike9241.  I should've clarified to the poster that they'd need an EIN only if they pay employees OR contractors.  Thanks!
