Question

Can someone please elaborate on the 'Payments with 2020 federal extension'? Is it for the actual 2020 taxes, or for the 2019 taxes for which I filed an extension in 2020?

The language is not clear in the instructions. I filed an extension for my 2019 taxes in 2020, and paid that tax due later in 2020. Does this mean that I can include this amount in the 'Payments with 2020 federal extension'? When it says '2020', I don't know if it means the 2020 taxes or the actual year 2020.

only enter the amount that you actually sent with the 2020 request for extension of time, either by mail or online.

any other amounts paid go elsewhere on your return.

your 2019 has nothing to do with this.

I also am having difficulty understanding this and the answers given haven't helped clarify it for me.  If, in 2020 while doing the taxes for 2019, we paid tax (for 2019) with our tax return that was due in 2020, is this the amount we can deduct?

 "we paid tax (for 2019)"

Only if you're talking about state income tax, you can list it on Schedule A.

Your federal tax is never deductible.

If you can't itemize, there's no reason to think about it.

Your tax paid with an extension is a credit.

That's what this thread is about.

How much of your 2020 federal taxes did you pay when you filed your tax extension?
