The "records" file contains forms and backup worksheets tht the IRS does not want to see in the submitted filing....either as an e-file, or as a paper-mail file.

So the Filing copy will always contain just what the IRS wants, and the records copy will show some extra calculation sheets that you can look at to see what yoru entries did in the background.  In fact, their are tow different records options to save as a PDF file. There's a second bigger PDF file choice that shows your W-2 and various 1099-??? worksheets, depreciation schedules for some folks, details of charity donations, etc, that show your entries for those backup forms and worksheets...thus you can see if you accidentally put the wrong numbers in some of those worksheet/form boxes...should a problem be found later.

Though the he 37 page file seems a bit much to me for the majority of taxpayers, I guess there are some situations where there might be that many pages.
