Question

Can’t creat me 8615 for child with 1099R

My spouse is retired disabled. As part of her disability package both my children until age 21 receive a separate distribution monthly for which a 1099R Is generated with their SSN.

Presumably this is considered unearned income. (But maybe I have this wrong?)

But assuming it is unearned income then don’t I need to create a filing for them with a form 8615? Especially for my younger son who has no other income.

In any case when I try to enter the 1099R it asked all the questions for example about retirement age. Which really don’t apply to my son obviously.

Nonetheless when I try to then generate an 8615 form, it tells me it can’t creat one because my son does not have unearned income.

thanks for all assistance

No, you do not use Form 8615 for the children who are receiving a Form 1099-R.

If that is the only income they received or the total of all income, earned and unearned, is less than $12,500 they do not have to file a tax return.

It’s over that amount (about 17k).  So a filing is required of some kind

Then the child has to file their own tax return to include the Form 1099-R that they received.  If you are claiming the child as a dependent on your tax return then the child Must indicate on their tax return that they can be claimed as a dependent.
