Can't e-file. Unable to locate attachment at / attachment/Form1116ScheduleB.pdf

The error message I am getting is "We can't e-file your return because we are unable to locate the attachment at / attachment/Form1116ScheduleB.pdf. Please go back and re-attach it. Then try e-filing again"

Why am I getting this error and how can I fix it.

I just got through finishing my taxes and it included the sch  b fine. Did you start over with the Foreign Tax button in deductions and credits screen and click through? That's what I did and had no problems.

Thank you for taking the time to share. I did exactly that and everything went OK till the “Transmit Return Now” and that is when it gave me the error message

since then I talked with customer service. The problem was not solved. I understand there will be a patch tomorrow that will hopefully fix the problem. Will wait and see

has turbotax issued a patch for this as part of a general bugfix (apparently not...) or do you have to contact them individually?

Same problem of not able to E-File. Unable to locate attachment Form1116 Schedule B. Start the review over on the Foreign Tax Credit Schedule B worksheet with no luck. Still unable to E-File???

    March 11, 2022

I just went to e-file and hit the same issue. Seems to be a Turbotax issue. One of many I am finding this year. The 1116 Form just came out this morning with the update so I guess they didn't test adequately. Hopefully it will be fixed quickly.

    Same problem as everyone else

It's Friday the 18th of March and it still isn't fixed. I hope someone called TT about this, I live overseas so it's difficult and I don't trust the mail system here.

    March 18, 2022

PlanetBob - I just uploaded the updates for today and things went through without a hitch and without the attachment. I wonder if because you are overseas the updates have not been put on the update servers that are in your area. (Most companies use services that cache things closer to the users.) I would wait a little bit and then try to update again.

Thanks for the info. I uploaded the updates today but I'll wait another day to see if it changes, although I use a VPN so I should be good.

I found a workaround. E-file Federal first, then e-file State.

    April 11, 2022

Filing federal first and then states worked for me too.

    April 11, 2022

I spent well over an hour with a TT rep and she couldn't help.

Tried updating the software--I have the latest version.

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling software, to no avail.

What "partially" worked was e-filing the amended state return,

but not the fed return.  That was successful. After getting state

confirmation, I'll reattempt the amended fed filing.

New to this thread but getting the same error message regarding the 1116B attachment.  I'm running TT Premier desktop on Windows 10.  I was able to efile Federal and Virginia successfully on March 27.  But today (April 9) I can't e-file an amended federal return using version 568 due to the 1116B attachment error.  Since it is an amended return I'm not trying to beat the 4/15 deadline, but I would like to get them started on sending my refund.

@rjbran was your returns accepted as you only need to amend if the returns were accepted?  Did you follow the correct process for amending below?  Did you fully update the software?

Note that you normally should wait at least 6-8 weeks prior to filing an amended return as that is how long it take the IRS to process returns.  You don't need to file an amended return if you discover a simple math or clerical error on your return. The IRS can correct those types of mistakes on its own. An amended return isn't necessary if you forgot to attach a certain form or schedule to your return, either. The IRS will contact you by mail if they need additional information to fix these types of errors. However, you should file an amended return if there's an issue that changes your filing status, income, deductions, or credits.

This was the process you had to file to appropriately amend the original return so TT knows it was the original filed and accepted return:

    1. Open your TurboTax 2021 software (you must amend your 2021 return in the 2021 version of TurboTax)
    2. Select Amend a filed return, located near the bottom of the homepage
    3. Select the return you wish to amend, then Continue
    4. On the Did you already file your return? screen, select Yes, I've already filed my return and then select I need to amend my 2021 return
    5. Select Continue. Don't worry if your refund changes to $0. This is normal for amended returns.
    6. On the next screen, select Update next to the info you need to change, then follow the onscreen instructions until you reach the screen Do you need to change anything else?
      • If you need to make more changes, repeat Step 6. When you’re done making changes, select Done
    7. Carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return
    8. Don’t forget to select Save As (Mac: select Duplicate) from the File menu when you save a copy of your amended return. This will preserve the tax return you originally filed
      • Name the copy you're saving so that you can distinguish it from the original, for example as 2021_amended_tax_return_Smith

Thanks, @maglib, but I'm confident that I need to amend (I double-entered the income from a 1099, and didn't bother to look over a print version before I e-filed, so I saw my mistake just a few minutes too late.  Let that be a lesson for you, kids.)  And I followed exactly the process you described to produce the amended return.  Like some others on this thread, I figured it was the fact that it was an amended return that triggered TT's "unable to locate attachment" error.

Same exact problem. Turbotax fix pls!

    July 9, 2022

Same problem here. I have patiently waited, and every two weeks I tried the updates and resend to no avail. Disappointed that TurboTax would not post an official update themselves, and had to rely on users to go ask and post is disappointing.

So... It's time to move on: I have wasted enough of my time.

    1. I will submit my paper amended by snail mail; and

    2. Start my research to use a different tax software (I had been using TurboTax for 22 years)

    July 9, 2022

Yes, I ended up filing my 2021 amendment through snail mail in May. Not an ideal solution. My 2019 amendment that the IRS received in March 2021 was just processed last week, so it's unlikely my 2021 amendment will be processed anytime soon. I've been a customer of TurboTax for 30+ years and am seriously considering going to another company next year, as well.

I have a similar issue with a different form.  Form7203.pdf

"We can't e-file your return because we are unable to locate the attachment /attachment/Form7203.pdf.  Please go back and reattach it.  Then try e-filing again."

Hope someone has gotten a solution.

    Please help.
