Turbo tax form states that if W-2 does not have a verification number, the 1040 has to be mailed.  But the instructions states we should e-file.  Can we or can't we E-file?

Carl has an IP Pin number that has to be put on the 1040 form, but there wasn't any instructions on where it should be inserted on the 1040 form.  Where is the box on the 1040 form that shows where the IP Pin number is to be inserted?

You should still be able to proceed with e-file without verification number on W-2.

Per IRS: "Some Forms W-2 employees receive will have a “Verification Code” box which is blank. These taxpayers do not need to enter any code data into their tax software product." https://www.irs.gov/individuals/w-2-verification-code

And you can use the steps here below to help you get to where you need to enter your 6 digit IP PIN, when using the desktop version of the software.

  • Click on Search Topics at the top
  • Type in IP PIN and select that and click Ok
  • Choose Yes, I got an IP PIN from the IRS, enter it in the box next to Your IP PIN and click Continue.
  • It will be sent electronically with the return once you e-file it.
  • If you print your return to mail it, you will need to write the IP PIN in the box next to your signature on the 1040. It will not print out on the return.
