Can you upload a current tax year's desktop app .tax file into the TurboTax web app?

A user may want to upload their current year's taxes from the desktop app to the web app with the .tax file if there are certain integrations that are only supported on the web app. For example, CoinTracker only integrates directly with the web app.

There's a feature to upload last year's .tax file into TurboTax web. However, I have not found a method for uploading the current year.

No, you cannot move a 2023 return that was prepared using the CD/download to the 2023 online software.  You can, however, switch from the online software to the CD/download.

Thank you! This is an important feature for Intuit to improve fundamental compatibility.

What is means is, if you want to use the crypto features, do that part of your return first in Online,

then finish the remaining forms in CD/Desktop.

@adamhurwitz   What is coin tracker?  Is that like Crypto?   Here are my notes from 2022.  I don't know if they made any improvements to the import process for desktop  this year.

Expert James says you can turn a csv file into a txf file and import it into the Desktop program,

If you can't import the txf or csv file into the Desktop program there might be another way.

You can only import crypto into the Online version. For Desktop program you can start a free Premium online return to import it then switch and open your return in the Desktop program. You can use the Online version and then move your return into the Desktop program without having to pay for Online. But that would involve starting a new Desktop return and starting over.

Since you have to start a new blank Online return you can start the Online return by transferring 2022 from your computer if you used the Turbo Tax Desktop program last year. Then download the crypto and move the online return back to the Desktop program.

If you used the Desktop program last year here’s How to transfer into the Online version. You need to have the prior year .tax2022 file on your computer. Expand the link if you used the CD/download last year........

Thank you for the detailed notes on cryptocurrency transactions @VolvoGirl! However this question is specifically focused on transferring a current year from TurboTax desktop to TurboTax web.

@adamhurwitz A 2023 tax data file from one of the TurboTax desktop editions cannot be transferred to the 2023 TurboTax online editions.

Only the prior tax year 2022  tax data file can be transferred to the 2023 online editions.
