Question

Can your Federal Primary address be different from your State Primary address?

I live and am domiciled in Florida but my spouse works and lives in Massachusetts but spends some time in Florida.  For Federal, we have thought to use the Florida address to file jointly, and then file separately for State with her filing in Massachusetts and me in Florida.  However, if we use Massachusetts as a primary address for Federal, does that mean I would also be forced to file a Massachusetts state return even though my legal and work reside solely in Florida?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Since the address information transfers from the Federal return to the state return, you are fine to use whichever address you choose.  If you choose the Massachusetts address, that will not cause any issues with filing a Married Filing Separate return for the state, only reporting your spouses income.

The address on a tax return is generally used to provide a point of contact after filing for the IRS or state agency to reach you in the event of questions or an issue.  The returns do not key off of the address to determine whether your need to file in that state.
