Hi

My child (23) is a full time student and made over $4400 dollars, Turbo tax is not allowing me to claim them as a dependent, because they made more then $4400. Is this a new tax law, or does turbo tax have a bug??

From everything I have read, the $4,400 income limit should not apply to your full time student child in determining dependent status.  From Turbo Tax site:

    Qualifying child

In addition to the qualifications above, to claim a qualifying child, you must be able to answer "yes" to all of the following questions.

    • Are they related to you? The child can be your son, daughter, stepchild, eligible foster child, brother, sister, half brother, half sister, stepbrother, stepsister, adopted child or an offspring of any of them.
    • Do they meet the age requirement? Your child must be under age 19 or, if a full-time student, under age 24. There's no age limit if your child is permanently and totally disabled.
    • Do they live with you? Your child must live with you for more than half the year, but several exceptions apply.
    • Do you financially support them? Your child may have a job, but they cannot provide more than half of their own support.

Did you maybe select that they did not live with you for more than half the year?  time away at college counts as living with you.

Your child must be under age 19 or, if a full-time student, under age 24, as of year end to qualify as your dependent.  If so, it doesn't matter if they earned more than $4,400.  You may not have indicated in the personal info section under the My Info section.   Form more information on who you can claim as as dependent, click on:

If i enter all the same information with the exception of them making aver $4400 dollars then i get the child credit. it does not ask me if he/she was a full time student, once i select that they made over $4400 it says i cannot claim them as a dependent. i cannot change the status either

If the program is challenging you after you enter the 4,400, the program is not recognizing this dependent as your "Qualifying Child".

It is recognizing the student as your "Qualifying Relative" until you enter the 4,400 income.

You need to answer a question in the Personal Info section to indicate the student is your child and a student.

Go to the Personal Info Section and click Edit for that dependent

Make sure you are selecting My Child

Make sure you have the correct Birth Date and the student was UNDER 24 in 2022

Make sure you have "The whole year" selected

Make sure you answer YES to "Was this person a Full-Time Student in 2022" (if they did not attend school at least part of at least 5 months, they may not qualify)

Be sure to indicate that the student DID NOT supply more than half their own support.
