Child tax credit

Hi there -

I have two questions that I am hoping you can help me with. First, I haven't received my child tax credit even though we qualify for it. On the end of the IRS website/tracker, it states its pending. I can't reach an actual human to talk with about this. I've tried for several days and I've been unsuccessful. I'd like to know more about why it's pending, but I can't seem to find anyone who can help me.

And second, in May I filed an amendment to my taxes which was accepted, but I still haven't received my refund. Again, I tried to call the IRS but I can't speak to a human. When I try to get more information on their website, it says it can't find my claim. I'm not sure what to do about this either. Any help you can provide would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Leonor

Hi, many people have been having issues receiving their September CTC payments. The IRS has acknowledged the issue and you should see it coming soon, just later than normal. And, any issues you have with the IRS, you can reach out to your Congressional office. They have liaisons with all federal agencies and can sometimes get you quicker answers.

Your eligibility for the monthly child tax credits is affected if you have an amended return pending in the system.   If you do not receive the monthly payments this year you can get the CTC on your 2021 tax return.

Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return.  During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six months or more for many amended returns.  Do not expect quick results from amending.  When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check.  They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns.  You can watch for information here:
