Claim mother on SS disability as dependent?

Hello,

can I claim my mother who is receiving SS disability as a dependent? I pay more than 1/2 her expenses (taking care of her rent) and the ss disability check is the only thing she’s receiving. If i claim her as a dependent how will this affect the amount of disability she receives (less or more for 2021)? Is the tax credit for dependents other than children only $500?

You may be able to claim her as your dependent under the Qualifying Relative rules if she meets all the requirements.  Social Security Disability payments are not affected by being claimed as a dependent.  Since she is not your child the tax credit for Other Dependents is $500.

To be a Qualifying Relative -

    1. The person cannot be your qualifying child or the qualifying child of any other taxpayer. A child is not the qualifying child of any other taxpayer if the child's parent (or any other person for whom the child is defined as a qualifying child) is not required to file an income tax return or files an income tax return only to get a refund on income tax withheld.
    2. The person either (a) must be related to you or (b) must live with you all year as a member of your household.
    3. The person's gross income for the year must be less than $4,200 (social security does not count) in 2019
    4. You must provide more than half of the person's total support for the year.
    5. The person must be a U.S. citizen or a U.S., Canada, or Mexico resident for some part of the year.
    6. The person must not file a joint return with their spouse.

If you claimed your mother as a dependent all you get is a $500 credit for other dependents on your income tax return.  The $500 stimulus is only for children under the age of 17, so no, you will not receive $500 stimulus for claiming her.  And she will not get the $1200 stimulus since you claimed her.  Dependents do not get the stimulus checks.
