My girlfriend's house was damaged in a storm. Her insurance company wrote me a check each month for 6 months ($3500) while her house was being repaired because she stayed with me and not at a hotel, do I have to claim that on my taxes as additional income?

Yes.  This was not shared expenses, this was rental income so you would need to claim it as rent on your return.  You will also be able to claim a prorated amount of your expenses since you are claiming this as rent.

To enter the rental income you will need to use TurboTax Premium Online or TurboTax Premier or Home and Business desktop version.

Where do I enter income and expenses from a rental property?

If I don't claim rental income on my taxes, can I get in trouble for that?

Yes. Rental income is taxable income and must be reported. If unreported you are essentially evading taxes.
