Clicking "File an extension" on TurboTax produces a message saying this function will be available for the 2017 tax year mid-March 2018. How can I get past this?

It's not been made available just yet. TurboTax Easy Extension for e-filing an extension, should be available sometime today, March 22, 2018. Give it a few more hours, as the developer team that handles it runs on Pacific time, so it's still early their time.
