Question

Commuter Expenses

Posts from 2019 indicate that commuting expenses are "not deductible on your Federal return"-- but what about New York state returns? Or is there a way to account for them in other ways to reduce tax footprint.

As some background, I pay into WageWorks, which results in tax free dollars that go toward my commute.  However, There are monthly limits, which I sometimes go over.

That sounds like a great program since you are getting the tax benefit when you deposit funds into the account since they are pre-tax dollars.

But as far as any tax benefit on your federal or state returns, no there are none. That commuter benefit for New York needs to be used by depositing funds, not on your tax return.
