I am a congressional staffer and I work for my home state member of Congress. My permanent residence is at my parents house in my home state, but due to my job, I work and reside in Washington DC.

The District of Columbia exempts both an employee of a Member of Congress (“staffer”) who is also a bona fide resident of the Member’s home state, as well as a Member of Congress, from paying District income tax. D.C. Code §§ 47-1801.04(17) and 47-1806.03.

This year I paid 7,500$ in rent. I am wondering if there is any way to claim the money I paid in rent if I’m filing my taxes in Indiana?

Indiana has a renters deduction, but it is for rentals in Indiana that have Indiana local property tax.

As you may know, unreimbursed job expenses for W2 work are no longer deductible on the Federal return. I do not see a method of deducting your DC rent on either the Federal or Indiana tax return.
