My son was born in January 2016 and live abroad since April with his mother(non resident alien).

Is he qualified as my dependent? I'm unmarried.

Do I have to live with him since his birthday?

There are two types of dependents, a qualifying child and a qualifying relative.  If he didn't live with you more than half the year he wouldn't qualify for the first type, but may for the second.

This does make sense.

One further question, If i claim my child as dependent.  He has insurance coverage from Jan 1st to August 30th.

if I file the tax on Apr 1st 2017. My son have been physically present in foreign country for a whole year by then. Does it meet the 330 day rule for health care exemptions? Do I need to pay the penalty for the rest of year 2016?
