You can claim your daughter as a dependent (and therefore claim an education credit for her college), if:

  1. She is under 24 and a full time student, and
  2. She did not provide more than half of her own support for the year, and
  3. She lived with you for more than half of the year (being away for college counts as living with you)

If she is qualified as your dependent, but must file her own tax return (she must file if her W-2 income is more than $6300 or her cash/check/1099-Misc self-employment income is more than $400) please be sure she indicates on her return that she is being claimed by someone else.
