Deceased mother's taxes (only social security)

My mother only had social security income and never had to file tax returns. Is a final tax return required for her simply because of the death, or is it not required because the social security amount is under the gross income amount?

Hello akmccarthy! I'm sorry to hear of the passing of your mother. There is no special requirement to have to file in the year someone is deceased, if her income was not over the filing threshold for the year then no return needs to be filed. I hope that helps!
