Deducting textbook expenses from taxable scholarship amount

My son has an academic scholarship to his college that is greater than the amount of tuition and fees. He has to pay taxes on the portion covering room and board, etc. However, Turbotax is not deducting the amount he spent on textbooks. I entered the amount, but Turbotax is not counting it as part of his Qualified Education Expenses--Part V, Line 7 in the Student Info Worksheet. Last year, Turbotax DID include textbooks on this line, reducing the scholarship amount subject to taxes. Why is it not doing so now?

Because the tuition and fees deduction expired at the end of 2017 and Congress has not renewed it.   The TurboTax interview still has it because some states still allow such a deduction but Federal does not.
