Dependent Income

My son turned 25 in October 2020 and made 1700 working during the summer.  According to the income area, once past 23, he is required to file his own return.  He was a full time student last year.  Does he need to file his own return?

He has to file his own return at any age if he has income.  You can still claim him if he made less than 4,300.  Did he get a W2 or 1099NEC for it?

You don't include their income on your return. It would only go on their return if they are required to file one.  They don't have to file if they only have W2 income under 12,400 but can file to get back any withholding taken out in boxes 2 or 17.  But you don't get boxes 4 or 6 back.

To file a separate return for a dependent in the Online version you need to set up a new account separate from the parents.  Online is only good for one return per account.  You can use the same email address for 5 accounts.  You can probably use the Free Edition or the Free File website

Be sure on the dependent return you check the box that says you can be claimed on someone else’s return.  If your only income is W2 and under 12,400 you do not have to file a return except to get back any withholding taken out.

This does not seem correct to me. I have a 21 year old full time student that made 2500 dollars. I can claim her, but don't I have to add her income to my income? I also have a 19 year old that made 12K, but is only a part time student. If I claim her as a dependent do I not also have to add her W2 to mine??

You don't include their income on your return. It would only go on their return if they are required to file one.  They don't have to file if they only have Social Security or W2 income under 12,550 but can file to get back any withholding taken out in boxes 2 or 17.  But you don't get boxes 4 or 6 back.   If they got a 1099NEC for it they do have to file a tax return for it.

Yes if for Federal, if the $1700 was from self-employment (1099-NEC), or if he had taxes withheld on a W-2.

State filing requirements may be different.  Did he have any scholarships or grants?

But he can still be your dependent if you provided more than 50% of his support, since his income was less than $4300.
