Dependent on social security

My grandma usually claims her son (who earns no income) on her taxes as a dependent.  He is now getting social security and had $8000 in benefits received last year.  That is all he earned last year.

Does her son need to file a federal tax return?  State (Michigan) return?

No, as a very general rule of thumb, if his only income is from Social Security benefits, the Social Security will not be taxable.

Michigan also does not tax Social Security.
