Dependent parent receiving SSI

Hello,

I supported my mom financially in 2022, and she qualifies as my dependent. However, she received her first SSI check at the beginning of December 2022. She even got her second check, for the month of January, at the end of  December 2022. The total amount for those checks was about $1,500.

My question is: can I claim her as a dependent? My main concern is that she might lose her SSI benefits if I do.

The information I have read is contradictory and confusing.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Yes, generally, the IRS allows you to claim your parent(s) if they didn't have more than $4,400 in gross income (excluding nontaxable Social Security) and you provided more than half of their support in 2022.

    • Your parent doesn't have to live with you. When you're entering your mother's information in TurboTax, there are a few other specifics we'll ask you about as we go along.

In regards to her losing Social Security Benefits, if she qualifies for Social Security benefits, the fact that she is your dependent should not affect her Social Security benefits.

    • However, please contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) to confirm that.
