Dependents

Sorry, if this question is over asked, but the answer seems to be very specific depending on the situation.

My daughter is 17 as of 12/31/2020, is a high school senior.  She had her own job and made under $3,000.00.  Did not pay her own expenses.  she is going to need to file her own federal and state tax return.

Can I claim her as a dependent?  and then on her federal return she indicates that someone 'else' "can" claim her and thus she loses her ability or need to claim herself on her federal return?

Yes you still claim her.  She is under 19.  She has to mark on her return that she can be claimed on someone else's return even if you don't actually claim her.

They don't have to file if they only have W2 income under 12,400 but can file to get back any withholding taken out in boxes 2 or 17.  But you don't get boxes 4 or 6 back.
