Disability

Hello,

I live in Nevada. I'm receiving Long Term Disability Insurance and elected to have the insurance company hold federal taxes. Should I be doing this? My employer pays the premiums for Short Term Disability which does not subject me to paying taxes, however; I pay the premiums for Long Term Disability but once the doctor informs you your disabled and can't return to work, you no longer pay the Long Term Disability premiums, instead; you start receiving monthly Long Term Disability  payments for the duration of the policy. The insurance company does not withhold federal taxes. They provide you with the form asking if you want them to withhold and how much. I elected to have them withhold federal taxes just to be on the safe side. I look forward to your answer.

Thank you

Yes, long term disability pay is taxable if it's received before the minimum retirement age. To avoid possible penalties, requesting tax withholding is a good choice.
