Do I have to file a tax extension for all of my taxes; or if I’m only missing one form can I file an extension on that one part?

I have all of my w2s but my husband has 2 w2 forms and a 1099 but he hasn’t received the 1099 form. Can I file an extension only on the 1099 or do I have to do all of them together?

Does he know the amount of the 1099? If so, he doesn't need to wait for it, he can just include the income on your tax return. If you file the extension, you are extending the entire tax return. All of your income (and his) gets reported together on one 2023 tax return. So, when you extend, you are extending the reporting of all of both of your incomes. The extension gives you extra time to file, but not to pay. Taxes are still due for payment on 04/15.

Turbotax is not making it easy for me to file an extension when my only income is from a 1099NEC. I don't have a w2. I have to enter zeros on the two extension w2 questions and then it say I own nothing when I know I owe something. The amount on the 1099 for 2024 is just over $3,000. Where to enter the info if filing electronically for the extension?

It sounds like you may only need to file because of earnings from self-employment. Estimate your net earnings from self-employment, and your self-employment tax.

The option to prepare an extension appears in Other Tax Forms under Other Tax Situations in both TurboTax Online and TurboTax Desktop. In TurboTax Online, the program links to the easy-extension website, whereas in Desktop, it prepares the extension form for printing.

Anyone who files for an extension is required to pay any estimated taxes due by the due date of the return. The extension is only to allow you to file up to 6 months after the deadline and not be assessed a late filing penalty. It doesn't extend the time to pay your tax. By filing your return on time, including extensions, you can avoid the penalty for late filing. Filing timely does not stop interest from accruing on any unpaid balance.

You request an extension for your 1040, not for the supporting documentation. Note that the extension applies to your filing only, not to your payment. Anything you owe is still due not later than April 15 or postmarked by that date In essence, you still have to figure everything out by the 15th. If you don't have the 1099 and don't know what it will show, make your best guess and figure things out on that basis so you can pay that by the 15th.

If you know for certain that you will be due a refund, of course, no payment will be due, but you have to request an extension anyway -- that doesn't become any less important.
