How do you expect to get a refund if you do not file a tax return?

Yes.  How else will the IRS know you should get a refund?  For 2020 or 2021?

...and...whether you are required to file, is based more upon what amounts of gross income, and/or what income types you had during the year...irrespective of whether you would get a refund, or not, if you did file.

Those levels of income, that may "require" you to file,  can depend on your filing status...married filing jointly...married filing separately.....Head-of-household.....Single...or perhaps even as a dependent of someone else/parent(s).

You can use the calculator at the following link on the IRS web site to see if you have to file a tax return.

@shaunti567 We do not know if you had enough income to be *required* to file a tax return.   But in order to seek a tax refund you must file a tax return.   You say that you "expect" a refund, but you do not say why you expect one.   If you have had tax withheld from your pay or from some other form of income that you are receiving, and have paid in more tax than you needed to pay, then you get a refund by filing a tax return.   Which tax year do you need to prepare a return for?
