Q. Do I have to file my 1098 T even if I didn’t work and don’t have taxes to file?

A. Simple answer: No. The 1098-T is only an informational document. The numbers on it are not required to be entered onto your tax return.

However receipt of a 1098-T frequently means you are either eligible for a tuition credit or possibly you have taxable scholarship income.  If you are a dependent, your parent (or whoever claims you) is allowed to claim the tuition credit on their tax return.

If you are not a dependent, are a half time or more undergrad, and over age 23 (or are an orphan or married) you may be eligible for an (up to) $1000 refundable tuition credit.
