Question

Do I have to get Deluxe for both federal & state online? Can I just get deluxe for federal? I'm seeing in stores that you can buy federal and state download for much less

The CD/download software is priced differently from online software----so you have to understand what you are choosing.   With the CD/download you can purchase it with the state software included to prepare federal and state returns for one specific state of your choosing; there is an extra fee to e-file a state return which can be avoided if you mail the state instead of e-filing the state.  But that one price for the CD/download lets you e-file up to five federal and state returns.

With online TurboTax you pay for using the software for the federal and pay another fee to use the software to prepare a state return.  The fee is the same whether you e-file or mail the return.   And you get ONE return per fee.

You cannot purchase the CD/download and use the license code to pay for online TurboTax.

Here is some information on pricing of the software:

You can also purchase the CD/download from various retailers such as Costco, Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, Staples, Sam’s Club, etc. etc. etc.
