Do I Have To Report Income Under $10

Hey everyone,

I write articles online, mostly for fun. I never make much money off of these articles through ads -- in 2020, I made less than $10. It may seem like a silly question, but is this something I need to report on my taxes? It seems like such a laughably small amount to report, but I don't want to forget to do so if I need to.

Appreciate any insight.

The IRS says you have to report all income however small.

You need to report this income as Other Reportable Income.

In TurboTax, open your return and follow these steps:

  • Click on Federal in the left-hand column, then on Wages and Income on top of the screen
  • Scroll down to All Income, locate the Less Common Income section
  • Click Show more and click Start next to Miscellaneous Income at the bottom
  • On the next page, click Start next to Other Reportable Income.

As the IRS Self-employed Individuals Tax Center explains, any income you earn for freelance work is taxable. This is true even if the person who you did the work for did not provide you with a form 1099-MISC. If you do freelance work, then you are wholly or partly self employed.

The rule is that if your net earnings – that's gross income minus business expenses – exceed $400 in the tax year, you must file a tax return and report all your self-employed income. Even if you make less than $400, you may have to file a return if you meet certain other requirements. The $300 earnings threshold applied in prior tax years but has now been raised to $400.

To report income earned as a freelancer, you should complete IRS Form 1040. If you are a sole proprietor, you may be eligible to submit Schedule C-EZ. Criteria for completing Schedule C-EZ include not having any employees and not deducting any expenses, such as for “the business use of your home,” the IRS explains. If you do not meet these criteria, fill out Schedule C. Form 1040 is where you will report the profit from your business, or losses, if applicable. All monies that you were paid during the year should be accounted for on Form 1040.
