Question

Do I need to contact my state to pay my remaining balance or will it be taken out of my account?

My federal refund was less than what I owe the state of Iowa, I'm just looking for if I will need to file some sort of thing or if they will just pull it from my account. I have not gotten a letter from them and its been about 3 weeks, with the tax deadline being on this upcoming Monday (4/18)

It depends. When you filed your return, what did you select?  Look at your return that you printed (every state has a different form) to see if at the bottom it includes your account number.  If it does and you are not getting a refund, then they are taking the payment.  If not, then you may want to contact them.

We do not have a way to see that here in the community.

Thank you for suggesting that! I panicked and completely forgot that was even a thing. Thank you. I feel so stupid now haha.

That's not clear at all.   We don't know what you originally chose for the method to pay the state tax due.

And  I'm not sure why you are mentioning your Federal refund and stated that it is "less than what (you) owe the state of Iowa."

What does the Federal refund have to do with it?     You cannot pay any state taxes owed out of a Federal refund regardless of the amount of the Federal refund.

Were you expecting the state taxes owed to be paid out of the Federal refund?  If so, that's not possible.  You have to pay the state taxes owed separately from the Federal by whatever method your state allows.  Only you will know if you chose a state taxes payment option or not.

If you chose to pay your TurboTax product fees out of the Federal refund, that's possible--but not any state taxes owed.

Look for a page in your return PDF called Filing Instructions (there may be one for Federal and one for State.)   The  Filing Instructions page may tell you the options you have for paying the state tax due in your state, and may indicate if you chose one.   You can also look at the state return itself to see if you chose a debit option for any taxes due as TurboTax @ Vanessa A  mentioned above.
