Do I need to file a state extension if I filed one for federal or are they both linked together

I live in Arizona

For Arizona, if you are expecting a refund then filing a Federal extension is all you need to do.

If you expect to owe Arizona taxes, then you need to make an electronic payment or file Form 204.
