When I added this W-2 it brought my federal return down $800, why is that?

but we have to be careful here.
You didn't really say that W-2 was your ONLY income for all of 2016.

IF you have other income in 2016 that pushes you over the filing threshold...for ALL your income for the entire year, then you have to file and include every source of income for the full year...whether or not you end up with a refund is immaterial in that case...you have to file a tax return and include all of it..
_____________________________________________
Your taxes are based on your total income for the entire tax year.....the initial Refunds you see are meaningless until ALL your income have been entered.....followed by all your Deductions&Credits....all of them

your Std Deduction and personal exemptions are applied to whichever income is entered first...that uses up all of those deductions, then the next income you enter will all be taxed instead of only part of it.

If your W-2, for 2016 had federal income tax withheld, you should file a federal income tax return to get money back (refund). TurboTax Online has a Free version you may be able to use.

If you choose to complete an income tax return and someone can claim you as their dependent, it is important that you choose the following options:

  • Someone else can claim me as a dependent on their tax return and
  • And this person will claim me on their 2016 tax return.
  • See the screenshot below.

To enter the W-2:

  • Type W-2 in the search bar and click search.
  • Click on Jump to W-2.
  • Enter the W-2 information.
