There is not a box 12 on a Form 1099-G received from your state for unemployment compensation.  You do not enter unemployment compensation received as a W-2.

To enter unemployment compensation

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Under Unemployment
  • On Unemployment and Paid Family Leave, click the start or update button

Or enter unemployment in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to unemployment

No, if there is nothing in the box you will not enter anything.  However, are you entering this as a W2 or in the 1099 G section?  If you are entering it as a W2 you will need to delete those entries and go back and enter it in the section for 1099G.

You can delete the W2 by clicking the trash can next to it on the income summary page.  Then scroll down and click show more next to government payments, then click start next to Unemployment, 1099-G.
