Question

Do non-immigrant worker need to update Social Security Number received during OPT period in order to file tax?

I first applied and received my Social Security Number as an F-1 student on OPT in 2016. In 2018, my immigration status changes from student to non-immigrant worker. Would I be able to file my tax for 2018 using the same Social Security Number, or should I replace/update it first?

If that's the case, I would be having an uncommon situation: I'm ready to file my tax return before the October extension deadline but just realizing my Social Security Number needs yet to be updated. Should I leave the Social Security Number information blank or wait past the deadline?

SS#s are issued for life ... only the ITINs need to be updated.
