Question

Do you claim Alimoney paid if there was no decree or order stating to pay?

My divorce was finalized mid December 2016. The entire year up to that date of divorce we were separated without any legal separation completed and he was paying child support and some spousal maintence (alimony). Do I have to claim what he paid before any legal form required payment or only the amount issued after the divorce was granted? Thank you in advance

Sorry, but voluntary alimony is not deductible.  Alimony is only deductible if paid under divorce or separate maintenance decrees or written a separation agreement
