Question

Do you have to make a certain amount to get a 1099 or w2?

I sometimes work on Facebook and have earned a little income doing Facebook reels. They have not sent me a 1099 or a w2. Should I have one, or is there a certain amount you have to make before getting one?

Facebook would not send a 1099 for your income if you made less than $600, and a W-2 is only for an employee so you would not receive one of those.

You may still need to report the income that you received from Facebook without a 1099. Please see this Turbo Tax Help article to see if you need to file a tax return.

You must file an income tax return if your net earnings from self-employment were $400 or more.  If your net earnings were less than $400, you still must file an income tax return if your total income exceeds certain thresholds.  This will depend on factors such as your gross income, age, and filing status.

If you do need to enter this in your return, follow these steps:

In your return:

  • Go to Income and Expenses
  • Choose Self-employment income and expenses
  • Click Add
  • Follow the program and answer the questions about your income and any expenses
