Question

Does my 17 year old need to file a tax return? Especially since I was asked to input their income on my return.

there is what is called the kiddie tax. if the child had unearned income in excess of a certain $ amount they must file. Under certain conditions the parents can include the child's unearned income in their return rather than filing a separate return for the child.  A separate return may be required if the child had earned income or even gain/loss from stock sales.
