Question

Does my wife need to upgrade to Turbotax Premier if we are filing separately and I sold investments that are in my name?

My wife has used the basic turbo tax software last year, before we were married.

Since you are filing separately, and your wife meets the requirements, then she can file a Basic return. You however, will need to use the Premier version since you have sold investments.

The questions only ask “did you or your spouse sell any investments” etc. They don’t specify if it’s you or your spouse. When answered yes, they say an upgrade is required. How do we show it was only the spouse?

No, your wife can use any version she qualifies for If you are filing separately. Only you must use Premier version since you have sold investments.
